Project InNeed

InNEED addresses the humanitarian need of a pre-emptive survivor system by engaging and empowering communities to mobilize, act and share resources through natural disaster crises.

Project InNeed
InNeed is a localized system that aids in natural disaster management. The platform aims to mobilize community through resource sharing at a time of crisis, and it serves as a virtual survival kit accessed through mobile technology

A rise in natural disasters and their subsequent effects calls into question current disaster management systems. As a result, a global ethos of pre-emptive systems of management and the development of resilient communities is becoming increasingly important. In response to this need, we explored research in disaster sociology, bringing forth the emergence of an organic process of community engagement that occurs after disaster situations. This human-to-human behavior became the premise of InNEED - addressing the humanitarian need of a pre-emptive survivor system of management through community mobilization. Leveraging everyday technologies, localized platforms and mobile devices are activated at the point of disaster when there is little or no connectivity - serving as virtual survival kits.

InNEED's phone application is pre-downloaded and installed on community members' cell-phone devices.

how it works
The system works through a series of base stations comprised of generators, wireless routers, connecting devices; installed throughout neighbourhood and community locations.

how it works

Pre-Disaster Connectivity - The community profiles are pre-installed and updated on cell-phone devices before the occurrence of a crisis. When a natural disaster strikes, these profiles are automatically activated and accessible to community members.

No Connectivity - At a time of infrastructure collapse, the system's value is maximized through the use of the survival toolkit, which is pre-downloaded on cell-phone devices.

Intermittent Bursts Of Connectivity - The base stations create hubs of connectivity - using a sneaker net connection system, the functionality of the message board leverages the natural movement of people from one base station to another.

InNEED's design solution takes into consideration the natural movement of the community at times of crisis and uses that organic process as a platform to build connectivity.
